The weekly perspective
One question to ask yourself
What beliefs do I hold about this situations?
Because of cognitive bias, If you believe something, you'll go through life finding things to prove it. If you believe you're rubbish at your job, you'll notice the critique from your boss but not so much the compliments. If you beleive you look 'bad', you'll be sure the person who double took you was looking at how awful you looked (and not your banging outfit).
Journal on this - whatever you don't feel super confident about right now, make a wee list, what beliefs do I hold? Can I actively look for evidence to dispute that, or challenge my thoughts about it?
Something to consider
"Consider it: every person you have ever met, every person will suffer the loss of his friends and family. All are going to lose everything they love in this world. Why would one want to be anything but kind to them in the meantime."
Sam Harris.
One thing I'd tell my younger self.
Allow yourself to be bored.
Every mindset guru or neuroscientist or spiritual leader I’ve listened to in the last year has said one thing. Our orjbkem is our inability to sit with boredom. This constant seeking of dopamine. Why we mindlessly scroll, eat, avoid our feelings. Heuristics make us reach for these habits.
One thing to try this week
Give yourself an hour in the morning before checking your phone.
I recommend (if it's ok to do so with family et al.), putting your phone on airplane mode before bed, and not turning it back on until you've been up for an hour. People who grab their phones first thing in the morning have shorter attention spans throughout the day. Our brainwaves shift from delta to theta and alpha during waking up time. But these brainwaves skip out theta and alpha (important for creativity and relaxing states) and go straight to beta and alertness when we grab our phones = one stressful morning.
A few things to tell you...
ADHD is such a topical conversation right now. So many of you are being diagnosed as adults. Steph and I recorded a podcast on nutrition for ADHD, so find that here.
Interested in nutrition for fibromyalgia? What about knowing when to diet if you struggle with disordered eating? Then listen to the most recent EIQ Nutrition podcast here - you will love it.
One more thing...
Please share your favourite stuff.
I'm really trying to have a more positive impact this year (it's where this Monday email spawned from). If there's something you really relate to or know someone who'd benefit from something in this email, please share it and pay it forward. Words are magical, and if I've learned anything from writing these emails to you for years, you never know when someone needs to hear the exact thing you've got to say.
