This Is A Life Changing Concept

People who menstruate are called women
Just saying

Gosh Gail are you ok hun?

On the days I’m refreshed and thriving like after I’ve taken an entire week off work, training and even knowing what time it is, I quite enjoy a troll comment like this one

Other days I delete and move on like it never even happened

Because it gives me content or and an insight into the minds of others

When this comment was left on my post about periods yesterday I was given both so let’s all collectively say thanks to Gail for being so selfless

This article isn’t about to dive into the conversation of all the women in the world who don’t menstruate nor those who identify as male who do

No

What I enjoyed about this particular comment is that it highlighted the reality that some people really do waste their time on things that have no purpose other than judgement and negativity

That on only the fourth day of 2024 some people are spending their precious time spreading words and thoughts that serve only to bring others down or share their unsolicited unhelpful opinion

That sadly some people need this air of judgement to find some sort of (shadow) superiority or happiness within themselves

It’s not their fault

I don’t blame people for falling into a negative space and maybe it’s their mental health and that is so rough for anyone including Gail

Everyone is doing the best they can from where they are

This article is a gentle reminder to consider the energy you allow into your space and the energy you exude into others’

Please allow yourself to feel the full spectrum of human emotion and be sad when you’re sad and angry when you’re angry and joyful when you feel joy and please articulate these feelings with those you love and trust

Feeling our feelings is very different from providing unsolicited unhelpful comment and opinion with a sole person to irritate or upset or bring others down

More so consider the energy and conversations you’re allowing into your own head

Think of the voices in your head like people in the attic

Whilst you, the listener, sit downstairs and hear their chitter chatter maybe rolling your eyes at their comments or feeling stung by their criticism

Now recognise that as the person downstairs you don’t have to listen to those people upstairs

You can bang the broom on the ceiling and order them quiet

Or ask them nicely to stop talking and that despite your understanding of their belief that their conversation is helpful for you in some way

We often think negative self talk drives ‘good’ behaviour or avoids us from being ‘too much’

You’d rather be present with what is right now and in silence than be overwhelmed by their voices

As we move into a new year I encourage you to be more intentional with the energy you keep in your soul and in your mind, the energy you allow around you and the energy you give to irrelevant spaces and conversations

Because as much as we can’t simply choose to just think positively, we can get curious about the people in our attic and those around us

About the role they’re playing for us and the potential help or hindrance they offer

Recognising that we are distinct from our thoughts was one of the most life changing realisations for me when I started the work they call self development

We utilise tools that incorporate this concept with 1000s of people every year at ETPHD, from recognising the self-critical voices that stop our self-compassion, to the food preoccupation that steals time from our precious lives, to the body checking thoughts and behaviours that leave us feeling hatred towards our bodies

I wonder where you can use this concept for yourself this year?

Stop reading for a second and simply notice the conversations in your head right now

And when you’re ready, ask them gently and kindly to quiet down as you focus on your day…

I’m always here,

Em x
