What do you want to be known for?
I think they actually thought I was funny,
I said to my boyfriend last night,
When I was recounting the night before at dinner,
After meeting 3 whole new people,
Genuinely having a great time,
And apparently,
Making people laugh.
To my surprise,
He wasn’t perplexed by my statement,
As he reaffirmed to me,
At least on occasion,
I can actually be quite the lols.
Gosh,
I’m getting turned on just thinking about it.
Until this email,
I’d told 3 people how funny I thought I was,
How buzzing I was to make people laugh,
And how surprised I was at both that reality,
And of going out with new people on a Tuesday night and genuinely having more fun than I do at home listening to Psychopedia,
The true crime podcast that continues to surprise and concern me at my interest.
And now,
I’ve told you too,
People thought I was funny.
Do you know how long the high a compliment on my ass lasts?
Approximately 0.5 seconds.
My hair?
About 3 seconds.
My energy?
Apparently, 3 days and counting.
You see,
That’s what I want to be known for,
The person with the great energy who makes people feel good about themselves,
Through laughter and ease,
And maybe with a good head of curls,
Ok definitely with a good head of curls.
I do not want to be known for being an empty but shredded vessel with a big ass.
I wonder then,
What you want to be known for?
And when you show up to events,
Or maybe even avoid them all together,
Become preoccupied by the food at the buffet,
Debating what’s ‘best to eat’,
Instead of being fully present in the company,
Why that feels more important to you?
You can of course,
Make healthful choices aligned with your goals and still make people cry with laughter,
But when that food focus turns to distraction and preoccupation,
The question then arises,
Do you want to eat in a more regimented way,
Even at the expense of your humour?
Humour is of course a value of mine,
Maybe you want to be known for something else,
Kindness,
Connection,
Making people feel at ease,
Feel safe.
Or maybe,
You want to be known as someone with an ‘admirable’ control around food.
As you approach the weekend,
Consider this,
What do I want people to think of,
When they think of me?
As much as it’s none of your business,
People will forget what you said,
Will forget what you did,
They’ll even forget how voluminous your curls were,
But they will never forget how you made them feel,
How well you listened,
Related,
And made them pee with laughter.
If you struggle with food and body preoccupation,
Here's a secret ETPHD resource that you get for free,
Take 15 minutes to do the task,
See what comes up,
Our clients love it.
This is a short one today,
Because I’ve got IFS this weekend,
And although Em and I have stopped at the cutest little farmhouse to do a work block,
I need to recharge,
So I continue to be the funniest person in town.
My social battery dies quicker than my phone,
And I’ve learned when I get below 30%,
Much like my phone,
I start to slow down,
Things get a bit jumbled,
And I definitely don’t give Katherine Ryan a run for her money.
Have a fabulous weekend,
Keep perspective,
And anytime you feel consumed by food or exercise,
Come back to the core question,
How do I choose to show up?
I’m always here,
With jokes and the best coaching team in the industry,
Em x
